Way back in the day (read: 2009), I met an awesome local on BrazenCareerist named Carlee Mallard. She was intelligent and sarcastic and I liked her immediately. She introduced me to her mom (Cyn Mallard) and her sister (Rianna Mallard) at TEDxRTP and the event was an experience that I’m not likely to ever forget.
I found out that Cyn was involved in organizing a local PechaKucha night. PechaKucha is properly pronounced ‘peh-CHAK-cha’ and is Japanese for ‘chatter’ or the sound of conversation.
The concept really spoke to me: You have 20 slides at 20 seconds per slide to get your concept/idea/passion across to the audience. The slides advance automatically so you had better keep up. See the video below for a quick overview of the PKN (PechaKucha Night) details).
Since I am an advocate of social media and the amazing powers of community it evokes, I decided to volunteer with PKN in a PR capacity at the 2nd PKN Night that took place at the Brick House in Raleigh.
Some of the presenters from the previous PKN discussed topics like:
- Trust in Business (Becky Sansbury)
- Love Media (Aaron Mangal and The LOVE-olution)
- I am Iron Man: You’re Not a Superhero; Make a Difference Anyway (Alex Gibson)
- The Differences in How Men and Women Learn (Richard Spangler)
and – Democratic Free Schools (Lynanne Fowl)
You can view all of these presentations and more here on the PKN Raleigh website.
On June 17th at Relevance in Durham (200 North Mangum Street, Suite 204, 27701), the 3rd PKN Night will take place at 7:30 PM (doors open at 6:30). It looks like we’re going to have a phenomenal lineup of presenters yet again:
- The Hive Mind: Lessons from Honey Bees (Jimmy Chalmers)
- Under Pressure? Dealing with Life’s Stressors (Doug Hughes)
- Epiphany Farming (Stephen Keith)
- So You Wanna Start a Business (Dan Wilson)
And so many more. You can view the complete lineup here at the PKN Raleigh site.
The event is FREE but you have to register here. Don’t be shy, PechaKucha is fluid and social. Lonerider will be serving free beer all night and there will be light snacks.
If you have any questions about the event, you can contact pknraleigh@gmail.com or go to the PKN website, www.pknraleigh.com for info!
